The Biocentrum is being established as a multidisciplinary center of excellence with a strong emphasis on research quality, international collaboration, and openness. Before it becomes operational, an international Scientific Council will be appointed. Together with the Director of the Biocentrum, it will participate in selecting suitable research groups, regularly evaluating their performance, and formulating the center’s development strategy.
The Biocentrum will bring together under one roof top scientific teams from the Faculty of Science, the First Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University. Their research addresses some of the most pressing issues of today’s world – from studying immunity, autoimmune diseases, and interactions between microbes and the immune system, to uncovering the molecular principles of the origin and evolution of life, plant development, and sensory adaptations in animals. Their work also includes the development of new catalysts, nanomaterials, and smart polymers that respond to light or temperature. Other teams focus on converting carbon dioxide into solar fuels, designing innovative chemical reactions for drug development, and seeking sustainable solutions in energy and industry.
A common thread running through all projects is the ambition to understand the fundamental processes of life and to transform scientific knowledge into practical innovations – for human health, modern technologies, and environmental protection. The Biocentrum connects basic research with applications that can drive progress in medicine, technology, and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges. Its research groups operate at an international level, secure prestigious European grants, and create unique research hubs that showcase the excellence of Czech science. The Biocentrum provides top scientists with first-class conditions to pursue world-class research right here in the Czech Republic.
